OVERVIEW: The Akya is a Turkish heavyweight, submarine-launched, wire-guided torpedo introduced in 2021. It is designed for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, featuring dual-mode acoustic homing and advanced countermeasure resistance.

DETAILS: Developed by Roketsan under the coordination of Turkey’s Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), the Akya is the first indigenously designed heavyweight torpedo to equip Turkish Navy submarines. It has a 533 mm diameter, uses a brushless DC electric motor powered by high-energy lithium-ion batteries, and is equipped with both passive and active acoustic homing. The system also includes fiber-optic wire guidance for real-time mid-course updates and programmable targeting modes. Designed for deep-water and littoral operations, Akya is compatible with all Turkish submarines using NATO-standard 533 mm torpedo tubes and is intended to replace older Mk14, SST-4, and Black Shark torpedoes.

TYPE: Heavyweight fiber-optic wire-guided acoustic torpedo

FUNCTION: After launch from a submarine, Akya follows operator-controlled wire guidance to the target area, then activates its advanced acoustic seeker to autonomously track and home in on submarines or surface vessels. It detonates on contact or proximity with a high-explosive warhead designed for ship-class targets.
